I started this blog in 2012 as a creative outlet where I could write about a few of my passions. Initially, I thought that I would write equally about wine and cycling and those areas where the two intersect (hence the “Drunken Cyclist” moniker–more on that below).
With Mme. Salvatore at her incredible champagne shop in Epernay, France (she’s the one in white).
Not too far along my focus became almost exclusively on wine for one simple reason: I found the more compelling stories involved wine–from the vineyard, to the tasting room, to the table. Just about every time there is wine in a glass, there is a story to be told.
And I am a story-teller.
While I take my writing seriously, I try not to take myself all that seriously. My goal, above all else, is to make people smile by chipping a bit of the mystique off of wine, since at its base it is a beverage that is intended to bring joy to those who consume it.
I have been an avid consumer of wine all my adult life, first being introduced to it while studying in Strasbourg, France. After graduating from college, I began my career in education as a high school teacher of French, math, and history. During the summer, I would relocate to France, spending the warmer months as a cycling tour guide through most of the country’s wine regions: the Loire Valley, Burgundy, Provence, Alsace, Bordeaux, the Dordogne, the Jura, and Champagne.
With Olivier Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet–I could listen to his stories for hours while sharing a bottle or two. I also love his hat.
Those trips were a lot of fun, of course, but they also taught me that there is a lot more to wine than what you find in the bottle. There is history, culture, tradition, and above all else, people with great stories to tell.
I still lead an occasional tour in Europe, but also find the time to visit the many great wine regions in the U.S. I have visited most of the wine regions in California numerous times, often by bike, and have ventured into Oregon, Washington, and New York, always in search of great wine, and a compelling tale.
*As for the name of this blog. I do not in any way mean to suggest that anyone should ride a bike inebriated (and yes, I get asked that all the time), but calling the blog “The Guy Who Rides a Bike Hard in the Morning So He Can Enjoy a Nice Bottle of Wine With Dinner and Not Feel Guilty About It” was a bit cumbersome as a title. I have thought about changing it several times, but I have been counseled against it–once you have made a bit of a “name” for yourself, you really can’t then go and change that name.

I just discovered the joy of drinking wine and riding my bike! It was so fun to go to a little wine bar close to home and then not have to worry about driving but rather walk around and then ride my bike home. Really want to do a wine tasting bike tour next time I’m up in wine country.

Honestly, though, I’m so glad you liked the Tissot Jura Cremant tasting note; French cremants pass unnoticed outside of France, and there’s an exciting variety of them from every region. I’m a category cheerleader. Sadly, we only see very few cremants here in Vancouver (Canada). Mind you, flip-side is that they’re still affordable!

I thought of a question I have for you about Italian wine. When we lived in Roma, years ago, and took students like we are doing to India, now, it was said that the Italians keep the best wine and export the less perfect. But the French export their best. Have you heard this before? Is it still true? We used to take empty bottles to the wine shops in Roma and have them refilled for a mere $1.00! It was always wonderful !

I have certainly heard it before referring to both France and Italy. Generally speaking, the “better” wines tend to be made in smaller quantities, which means that they better wines can all be sold locally. I still think that exists to a certain extent, but aggressive importers are still getting plenty of good wine in. As for the refills–that still exists, but it is rarely the “best” wines–part of the reason they taste so good is the locale where you are consuming them!

Very interesting. Have you visited Gascony in southwest France? We saw a beggar eating pâté’ from a can. Husband loves the dark dark wines like Malbec. . . Not me! Thanks!

I think it’s a bit long, Jeff. The info is great – all of it – but it kind of takes a long time to say what you’re saying because you’re saying it with a lot of extra words. To me, you should follow how you named it The Drunken Cyclist and try to parse it down a bit – or I’m happy to do an edit for you!

My husband is the cyclist in the family, going to work on his bike, and he just returned from the second leg of his bike trek from Gibraltar to the North Cape; so far he’s covered Gibraltar to Madrid, and Madrid to Bilbao (Spain). Being Swiss, we enjoy a good bottle of wine occasionally; and as I’m the writer in the family, between the three of us we’ve got a lot in common. 🙂 Love the title of your blog!

I thought of you (cycling, wine and stories) and hope you don’t mind me taking the liberty of asking if you would consider suggesting a wine to accompany one of the books, i.e. a ‘novel pairing’ – its an idea I got from the clever people at wine merchants Corney & Barrow. I know my London location meant it wasn’t feasible for me to participate in your ‘Secret Wino Wine Swap’ but perhaps we can exchange a book and wine suggestion, not so secretly. If you’ve not read The Rider by Tim Krabbe and feel you’d like to take on the challenge of proposing a suitable wine to enjoy with it, I’d be very happy to send you a copy. Or maybe there’s another book on your reading list that’s awaiting a suitable tipple to enjoy with it?

I just f found your blog. I enjoyed your comments about flash sales. I started using flash sales several years ago usinf WTSO and Lot 1. When I moved from Florida to Alabama 4 years ago, Lot 18 would not send me wines even though it is legal. You did not mention this one even though they are listed as the #2 in sales. For some reason WTSO will not keep my name on their email lists . I use Invino and have been very happy. How do you feel of these? Your advise about “googling” wines is very good as most of these mines re not found om WS. Add my name

Love the site! I can’t think of the last time I actually got on my road bike (do they still make Shimano 105 components?), but I still manage get out on my Trek occasionally. As for wine, we live in Ontario’s wine belt, with a few vineyards within walking distance, so I’m happy to have found your site. Cheers!

Hi, I just read your piece on Jimi Brooks. One of the most eloquent pieces I have ever read. I am from Oregon and knew Jimi casually through another winemaker. Just really good. If you ever come through Oregon again would love to meet up with you, share a glass and tell you a real Drunken Cyclist Story, it did not involve wine but it is humorous nonetheless.
