Another week has gone by and I have another quiz for you. First, a quick review of last week’s quiz. As I mentioned last week I have been reading Sideways the novel upon which the movie is based. One of the earlier scenes shows Miles and Jack stopping off at their first winery, Sanford, for a tasting. Which led to last week’s question:
That tasting room is not a part of Sanford Winery today, but it is the tasting room for another winery. What is the ‘new’ winery?
Extra Credit: Explain what happened….
Well, as Talk-a-Vino correctly pointed out, it used to be the Sanford Winery, but now the winery has a huge, relatively new facility and it is owned by the Terlato Group. Richard Sanford, the founder of the eponymous winery opened the Alma Rosa Winery in 2005 and kept the old tasting room that was seen in the 2004 film.
The extra credit is not all that easy, and it depends on who you ask. The short version? It seems as though after a rather difficult vintage (2003?), Richard Sanford took on an investor, the Terlato Group. A few short years later, Sanford, a pioneer in the Santa Rita wine scene, was forced out of his own winery. He is not even mentioned on the Sanford Winery website. Yeah, a bit of a downer.
Let’s move on to this week’s quiz.
I have decided to go a little cryptic with this week’s quiz and the question is short and sweet:
Which of the following vineyards in France is generally accepted as ‘gargantuan’?
- Clos de Vougeot
- Clos du Mesnil
- Clos de la Coulée de Serrant
- Clos de l’Écho
Extra Credit: Can you name the wineries that made each of the above famous? (OK, one of them has tons of producers, but the other three have just one).

Ah, Clos de Vougeot….was there just last fall…Given that I have no clue, I am going with Clos de Vougeot as gargantuan just because of the number of producers and the high retail price its wines commend…but, I don’t even count this as an entry in the competition…

I’ve no clue but I’m looking forward to the answer 🙂

I also agree with thewinegetter that this should be Clos de Vougeot. As far as producers go, I can only name Krug which makes Clos du Mesnil Champagne.
Great quiz, as usual.

Need to think a bit outside the box here….

well, I was just trying to give a quick answer based on straightforward logic (read – tried to be lazy) – however, you note about “going a little cryptic” was suggesting that straightforward answer will not cut it.
Now with your reply, you kind of requested that I stop being lazy and make some effort here. As the result, I have to change my answer – now, the right answer is Clos de l’Écho, the best vineyard in Chinon, which is in turn associated with Francois Rabelais, who wrote satirical novel “Gargantua and Pantagruel” and was the owner of the domain in the past.
There, you asked for it. : )
