A few weeks ago, I mentioned that I was “hired” as a writer for a national website, examiner.com. Many of you gave me great feedback about the site including:
- Too many pop-up ads
- Some rather “dicey” links associated with the site
- The site has a bit of a tabloid feel to it.
I agree with all of those criticisms and I thank you for voicing them.
Nonetheless, I decided to keep writing for them, at least for the time being. I made the decision mainly since it is a different style of writing than I do here or on the Pennsylvania Vine Company site (where I hope to have another article soon).
I just posted my second article over at examiner.com on great sparkling wine pairings. If you are so inclined, hop over there and let me know what you think (link below). If you are not so inclined, I understand (more or less).

Always love food and wine pairings 🙂 But without ad-block it’s impossible to read. These video ads that start playing automatically are so annoying..

Yeah, I know. That alone will probably make me stop.

Oysters and champagne, – is there anything better? Paring it with popcorn sounds interesting though..

There really is nothing better (since I do not eat caviar all that often). You have to give the popcorn a try and let me know if you agree!

I had the Roederer lineup on our trip to California a couple of weeks ago. They were fantastic! Not a bad sparkler in the bunch!

Thanks so much for the comment! Did you go up to Roederer in Anderson Valley? I have been meaning to get up there for some time now….

Yes, we went to Roederer, Scharffenberger, Handley and Husch. Roederer was my favorite hands down.

Love the pairing with sushi. I like a cremant or even a US or Canadian bubbly for those spicy rolls. Sake just doesn’t do it for me. Too heavy? Maybe.

Yeah, I agree. I never understood the whole sake thing. I don’t drink soju with Korean food (that stuff is nasty) so why do I have to have sake?

I meant the Soju, not the Korean food, is nasty!

Drinking Sparkling wine just because you can should certainly be encouraged and I love your non-pretentious take on these matchings. How could you forget cake though?! (or perhaps that’s just a British thing 🙂 ).

I am not sure “cake” means the same item on this side of the Atlantic! But thanks so much for the kind words!

Definitely keep writing for them. Great post. It opened my horizon to pairings for a wine I am often stumped on when to drink (besides as a welcoming drink).

Thanks so much WG! I will likely write a few more times, but I thought I was actually going to get paid, but that seems unlikely….

I agree with ALL your food pairings (I would probably add more)… but I disagree with your opening sentence: “Everyone seems to save that bottle of bubbles for a special occasion” – not me, drink it as often as possible!

You are so right! I should have said “Everyone…occasion (except the truly enlightened that drink it on a daily basis)”!

Well done, Jeff! And quoting your own post, “If you have not had a dozen oysters and a bottle of bubbles, you simply have not lived”: amen, Jeff! 🙂

It took me a while to come around to the oyster thing, but now nary a week goes by that we don’t have a bunch.

Great article, Jeff! Hadn’t thought of pairing sparkling wine with popcorn — love the idea and love sparkling wine. While living in Australia, I became a huge fan of Sparkling Shiraz — Aussies often drink it in lieu of Champagne.
Keep us updated on more of your Examiner articles! Cheers.
