It is Wednesday again and it is time for another installment of Wine Trivia Wednesday. Before we get to this week’s quiz, we need to get to the answers from last week. Last week’s quiz was a visual one, based on photos. The first three are wine related, the last two are about cycling.
- 1. Who is this and what does he have to do with wine? Gotta admit–a little spooky looking. Photo from Wikipedia
- This is a photo of Rudolf Steiner who was a pretty crazy Swiss guy. His influence on wine? The concept of biodynamics.
4. Who is the guy in the photo that appears in a lot of my bottle shots?
Eddy Merckx. The greatest cyclist of all time (and that is not an opinion).
5. Who is this guy? From Wikipedia
Former professional rider, Bobby Julich.
No one got all the answers right (clearly none who played are big cyclists since no one got Eddy Merckx), but the Art Predator answered three correctly and is this week’s winner. Honorable mention to Talk-a-Vino for getting Pinot Gris!
This week, I thought I would return to some trivia about Champagne. As I mentioned a few days ago, this summer I will be heading to the region to lead a bike trip, so I thought I should start brushing up on a few facts.
This week’s quiz is rather straight forward. We all know (at least you should) that Dom Pérignon is made by Moët et Chandon in Epernay. It is their “Tête de Cuvée”–roughly translated as their “Top Blend”. Most of the big houses have their own “Tête de Cuvée” but they are far less well known (and many are certainly better wines) than good old Dom. So for this week’s quiz, I give you a few “Têtes de Cuvée” and all you need to do is give me the producer.
- Winston Churchill
- Louise
- Cristal
- Comtes de Champagne
- Ace of Spades
- Belle Epoque
- Clos d’Ambonnay
- La Grand Dame
Extra Credit: Of these, which is generally the most expensive?
Have fun with the quiz–answers next week!

Yay, Champagne! :o)
Winston Churchill — Pol Roger
Louise — Pommery
Cristal — Louis Roederer
Comtes de Champagne — Tattinger
Ace of Spades — Cattier
Belle Epoque — Perrier-Jouët
Clos d’Ambonnay — Krug
La Grand Dame — Veuve Clicquot
The priciest? Krug’s Clos d’Ambonnay. You’re into the thousands, plural. The only way I will ever taste this is if someone else is buying . . . ;o)

Come on, no Clos du Mesnil? I’m not playing…
Winston Churchill – Pol Roger
Louise – Pommery
Cristal – Roederer
Comtes de Champagne – Tattinger
Ace of Spades- Armand de Brignac
Belle Epoque – Perrier Jouet
Clos d’Ambonnay – Krug
La Grand Dame – Veuve Cliquot
Considering that Ace of Spades is available in three levels, their top level will be the most expensive to my knowledge…
Fun quiz, thanks!

You take the Clos de Mesnil, I’ll take the Ambonnay (and then sell it and buy three bottles of Mesnil)!

I thought it was the other way around, but you are right. Okay, so will you share at least one of the three?

Both your quizzes and Anatoli’s show me how much I have to learn, but that’s the point, right? Enjoyed it.

Hey … hold on … I thought I had at least 4 last week with the Cliff Clavin method!
Meanwhile, my knowledge about these wonderful bubblies is quite limited, so I pass, but enjoyed reading answers of others.
