Well, it is Wednesday again, and time for the Weekly Wine Quiz. Last week, the Quiz was comprised of a few general wine knowledge questions, which we need to address first.
1. Of the following, which would benefit the most from decanting?
a. 1950 Bordeaux b. 2012 New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc c. 2008 California Cabernet Sauvignon d. 2013 Beaujolais Nouveau
C. 2008 California Cabernet Sauvignon. A young cabernet can benefit from some extra air to open and soften up. Some might think that the older Bordeaux might need a decanting and while this might help to limit the amount of sediment that gets into the glass, 1950 was not that good of a year and decanting might actually harm the wine. As for the other two? Um, no.
2. Which major wine growing country has never experienced significant issues with the phylloxera louse?
a. Australia b. Chile c. New Zealand d. United States
B. Chile. If you have not realized yet, most of the answers on these quizzes are “B” or “C.”
3. Which of the following best describes a “harsh” wine?
a. Excessive acidity b. Excessive alcohol c. Low Tannin d. A corked wine
A. Excessive acidity.
4. What do you call someone who collects the metal caps that are on the top of a champagne cork?
a. placophilatelist b. placomusophile c. placonumismatist d. placodufus
B. Placomusophile. Another “B”–start paying attention.
Kermit Lynch renowned wine importer in Berkeley, California.
That means we are a bit down from last week’s record seven winners–we have just one who got all the questions right (and the bonus)–Theresa of Project Partners Design (and her “prize” is to be added to the blogroll–her daily hits should now go up astronomically). Honorable mention goes to Foxress (From Vinho Verde to Barolo with Love), The Food and Wine Hedonist, and aFrankAngle (who claims that Kermit Lynch never mowed his lawn–no comment from the Kermit Lynch camp on that one yet). Congrats all and thanks for playing!
On to this week’s quiz. Once again, instead of focusing on one wine region, the quiz this week is a hodgepodge of wine trivia. So in no particular order:
1. Which of the following is not used to describe wine?
a. acerbic b. brooding c. coarse d. dull
2. Which borough in New York City grows and produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Merlot?
a. The Bronx b. Brooklyn c. Queens d. Staten Island
3. Which of the following might you find on a bottle of champagne?
a. Brut Sauvage b. Demi-Brut c. Méthode Champenoise d. All of the Above
4. Which of the following is the biggest fast food pairing faux pas?
a. Merlot and In & Out Burger (or Five Guys) b. Champagne and KFC c. Barbera and Pizza Hut d. Pinot Noir and Chipotle
Bonus Question: Who is this?

Alright, here we go –
1 – I’ve seen all of those describe wine. And me. My guess is A.
2 – Bronx or Queens, because property value is too high in Brooklyn these days. I say C Queens
3 – I guess A. I never heard of Demi-Brut and I don’t know if they’d actually have to spell out C on a bottle actually from Champagne.
4 – D, because you need to have beer with a burrito
5 – Warren Haynes, guitarist for The Allman Brothers Band

I wanna play too this week:
1) Educated guess: A.
2) I am thinking Queens for whatever reason…
3) D
4) That’s a tough one, knowing how much you both love PN and Champagne. However, to me pairing disgusting KFC with Champagne would be the worst. And I can imagine the other three actually working. So, B.
5) No clue. Some kinda hippie.

3. Brut Sauvage
4. I don’t know but Barbera and American Pizza (Pizza Hut) doesn’t sound like a great pairing to me so I’m going with C.
5. Maybe a local Philly farmer?
