A Few Days in the Finger Lakes

These past few days, I have been on a tour of several wineries in the Finger Lakes region of  upstate New York. Not only are there many great wines produced here, but it is strikingly beautiful.

The tour started with a lunch at Ravines…

…prepared by Lisa Hallgren…

…with wines by Morton Hallgren.

We then headed to Hosmer and tasting several vintages of the relatively rare, at least in the Finger Lakes, Sauvignon Blanc.

We then stopped at Lakewood Vineyards…

…for a Riesling tasting in the vineyards.

The next day started early with Bruce Murray of Boundary Breaks…

…with clonal selections of Riesling.

Philly lives in the Finger Lakes.

Wherever there are vines in the Finger Lakes, the water is never far away.

The Gamay Noir was one of the highlights at Sheldrake Point.

For some reason I am fascinated with clamps.

Lunch was at the Bistro at Thirsty Owl.

Oscar Bynke of Hermann Wiemer seemed to be omnipresent. Here, at their nursery at Standing Stone, their recently purchased vineyard.

Fantastic views abound at Lamoreaux Landing…

…as do some of the best Rieslings of the visit.

The sun will soon set on my trip, but like the last visit here, I vow to be back soon.

About the drunken cyclist

I have been an occasional cycling tour guide in Europe for the past 20 years, visiting most of the wine regions of France. Through this "job" I developed a love for wine and the stories that often accompany the pulling of a cork. I live in Houston with my lovely wife and two wonderful sons.

Next time take your bike. We rode the Bon Ton Roulet one year and had a fabulous time. Rest stops at the wineries and the baggage truck picked up your purchases for enjoying in camp that evening. http://bontonroulet.com/

  5. Happy to see you enjoyed your visit to the FLX. You stopped at some of my favorites but gave me some good ideas for our next trip. Cheers and Fins Up! That Rocky poster was in the bathroom at Boundary Breaks wasn’t it?

  6. I love the Finger Lakes! As you say, it’s gorgeous and the wines are great. I also enjoyed the local cheeses and meats. Lots going on in the area with a great country feel.
