Summer Travel: Exploring Wine and Cycling Adventures

Summer. Easily my favorite season when growing up with it’s longer days, sweltering temperatures, lack of any real responsibility, and the lure of my birthday occurring near its end.

Since moving to Houston over nine (?!?) years ago, summer has meant something completely different; now, the middle three months of the year mean travel. Unless you are a complete glutton for punishment, it is next to impossible to stay in Houston for the entirety of summer (I haven’t checked yet, but today’s forecast is likely a high of 95-96 with a humidity to match).

So far this summer, I have been to Italy for three weeks, both Austin and San Antonio for long weekends (yes, Austin and San Antonio are both rather uncomfortable in the summer, but they are not on the same level as Houston, at least in my mind), and I was also due to spend a long weekend in Minneapolis, but that flight was cancelled due to another feature of Texas summers, extreme weather (you may have heard about that).

The next trip is tomorrow as I head off for two weeks in Slovenia, much of it either on the Mediterranean Coast or at a ski resort in the Alps. Yeah, I know, rough life.

Why do I mention all of this (other than the somewhat obvious humble brag)? Well, I had another article published in the Chicago Wine Press, this one focused on travel, specifically travel that combines two of my passions, wine and cycling.

So head on over and give it a look and make sure you let me know what you think. The three photos are all from my travels. If you scroll to the third photo, you will see my wife. She was not excited about the inclusion despite it being one of my favorite phots I have ever taken.

Oh, and happy travels!

About the drunken cyclist

I have been an occasional cycling tour guide in Europe for the past 20 years, visiting most of the wine regions of France. Through this "job" I developed a love for wine and the stories that often accompany the pulling of a cork. I live in Houston with my lovely wife and two wonderful sons.
