Sundays Are For Sebastian #382

Sebastian is our fifteen-year-old son and he says some of the funniest things–we have no idea where he gets his material since his mother and I are rather boring, serious people.

Last weekend, Sebastian and I drove up to Dallas for his latest basketball tournament. That meant eight total hours in the car with a kid who notoriously does not like to talk all that much.

I tried numerous different strategies to get the conversation flowing, which would also serve to keep me awake.

Me: “Name your top five U.S. presidents, go…”

Sebastian: “George Washington.”

Me: “Well, he was the first, so OK.”

Seba: “Abraham Lincoln.”

Me: “He is definitely on most lists.”

Seba: “Um, Kennedy?”

Me: “Well, he certainly inspired a great many people…”

Seba: “But he was assassinated…”

Me: “So?”

Seba: “That’s embarrassing.”

Me: “Embarrassing?”

Seba: “Yeah! I mean, he was in a convertible, what was he thinking?”

Me: “Probably not that he was going to get shot… but what about Lincoln, he was also assassinated?”

Seba: “Yeah, but he was at least at the movies when he got killed.”
