Welcome back to our weekly wine quiz. This week, I decided to contribute a question about the famous Veuve Clicquot. While many wine geeks have derided the wine since it has become a bit ubiquitous (and over-priced, in my opinion), I still enjoy it. It generally has more pinot noir than chardonnay or pinot meunier, which is right up my alley. Don’t be afraid to also share your thoughts on Veuve: like it, love it, hate it? Find it just way too cliché?
As for the question:
In 1805, after Madame Clicquot-Ponsardin had only been married for a few years, her husband, François died and she became ‘Veuve’ (French for widow) Clicquot-Ponsardin. She greatly expanded the family business of making champagne, making the company a huge success. The success of Veuve Clicquot was due, in part, to a process that she developed.
What innovation is attributed to Veuve Clicquot?
A. Including the metal cage over the cork.
B. Controlling the secondary fermentation in the bottle.
C. Removing the sediment from the bottle.
D. Adding the “dosage” to make a demi-sec style.
