Well, it is Wine Trivia Wednesday, and as is the custom, before we get to this weeks quiz, we need to clean up the answer from last week. If you recall, I gave you four pictures of Alsatian grapes on the vine and asked you to identify the varieties. Here were the four pictures:
A.
B.
C.
D.
The correct answers were:
A. Riesling
B. Pinot Gris
C. Gewürtraminer
D. Muscat
That means Talk-a-Vino wins yet again. Since he has been dominating the wine trivia here, you should really go and visit his blog–obviously, the guy knows what he is talking about!
I have decided to be a bit more vague with this week’s quiz, but if you search for it, I am sure you will come up with it. Well, I think I know at least one of you that will….
About a hundred years ago in France, there was an ‘innovation’ that enabled many more growers to also produce wine. There is some dispute, but the innovation probably appeared first in Alsace right before the turn of the century. It then quickly spread to the rest of the country and today, roughly half of the wine produced today in France ‘uses’ this ‘innovation’. By and large, this ‘innovation’ does not exist in the U.S., although in recent years there has been a somewhat related ‘innovation’ that has enabled more people to become wine makers.
Is that vague enough for you? To help you out, here are a few pictures I have taken. One of them contains a clue about this ‘innovation’.
So, what was this innovation?
Extra Credit: In which picture is the clue (and what is the clue)?
Extra Credit #2: What is the U.S. counterpart?
Let me know what you think!

Man, you got me working and learning about the wine history like mad! So the answer is Winemaking Cooperative, the clue is in the first picture (with the group of people standing). I’m not sure what is the right name for US – seems that winemaking club, wine co-op, cooperative winery are all might be relevant here.
This is my best and final answer : )
