As I mentioned, I was out in Washington last week, so I thought I would focus on the local wine scene. Which of the following are true about Washington wine?
A. The term ‘Meritage’ was first used in Washington.
B. Most of the vines in Washington are planted to their native rootstocks.
C. More new vineyards have been planted to Pinotage than any other variety in the last three years.
D. Washington has more AVA than California.
This week, we have three winners: Talk-a-Vino, Vinoinlove, and Wineandhistory all correctly responded with ‘B’. Apparently, due to the largely sandy soils in Washington, the phylloxera louse has not decided to prey on the rootstocks in Washington, and therefore they have not needed phylloxera resistant replacements. Many claim that this results in better grapes and therefore better wine, but who really knows?
On to this week’s quiz. Leaving the Pacific Northwest, I came down with a bit of a nasty cold, so I do not feel like making this week’s quiz all that intricate or tricky.
True or False: Zinfandel and Primitivo are two names for the same exact grape variety.
Good luck with the quiz and Happy New Year!
To answer your trivia question: True – based on the DNA testing, both grapes trace back to the same grape from Croatia called Crljenak Kaštelanski.
Happy New Year and feel better : )

Zinfandel is the American name for Primitivo therefore I say: True. In the 19th century American vintners who were visiting Apulia imported the grape to the United States.
