It is Wednesday again and it is time for another installment of Wine Trivia Wednesday. Before we get to this week’s quiz, we need to get to the answers from last week. As you may recall, I had been in Jury Duty all week, but did not get to participate in the judgment (I was an alternate).  Thus, the theme last week was the Judgment of Paris:

1. What was the Judgment of Paris? The ‘Judgment of Paris’ was the somewhat fanciful title given to a blind tasting competition between French and American wines.
2. When and where did it take place? It took place in Paris (duh) back in 1976.
3. Which wines won competition (there are two answers)? 1973 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon and the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay took top honors.
4. Which wines came in last in the competition (again, two answers)? 1969 Freemark Abbey Cabernet Sauvignon and the 1973 David Bruce Chardonnay.

Perhaps far too much importance was placed on this competition (it was perhaps not the case back then, but “competitions” today seem to be rather far from “competitive”), but it marked the first time that American wines beat their French counterparts in a blind tasting.
