Wine Trivia Wednesday–Going Back to Cali

It is Wednesday again and it is time for another installment of Wine Trivia Wednesday. Before we get to this week’s quiz, we need to get to the answers from last week. As you may recall, I had been in Jury Duty all week, but did not get to participate in the judgment (I was an alternate).  Thus, the theme last week was the Judgment of Paris:

  1. What was the Judgment of Paris? The ‘Judgment of Paris’ was the somewhat fanciful title given to a blind tasting competition between French and American wines.
  2. When and where did it take place? It took place in Paris (duh) back in 1976.
  3. Which wines won competition (there are two answers)? 1973 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon and the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay took top honors.
  4. Which wines came in last in the competition (again, two answers)? 1969 Freemark Abbey Cabernet Sauvignon and the 1973 David Bruce Chardonnay.

Perhaps far too much importance was placed on this competition (it was perhaps not the case back then, but “competitions” today seem to be rather far from “competitive”), but it marked the first time that American wines beat their French counterparts in a blind tasting.

Bragging rights this week go to: talkavino, shewinessometimes, armchairsommelier, and chrislarkinsgoodgrogblog. Honorable mention to both thefoodandwinehedonist and aFrankangle who both attempted the quiz without a single Google.

On to this week’s quiz.

I am heading out to California this week and will no doubt be hitting a few wineries.  So I thought this week’s quiz should be about the Golden State.

  • If the label says ‘California’ what percentage of the wine has to come from the state?
  1. 75%
  2. 85%
  3. 95%
  4. 100%
  • Approximately what percentage of all American AVAs are located in California?
  1. 30%
  2. 50%
  3. 70%
  4. 90%
  • Approximately what percentage of U.S. produced wine sales are California wines?
  1. 45%
  2. 55%
  3. 65%
  4. 75%
  • Today, there are over 50,000 acres planted to Merlot. How many were planted to the variety in 1960?
  1. 2
  2. 20
  3. 200
  4. 2000

Have fun with the quiz–answers next week!

My in-laws claim to live in the "Bay Area" but they are no where near this.

About the drunken cyclist

I have been an occasional cycling tour guide in Europe for the past 20 years, visiting most of the wine regions of France. Through this "job" I developed a love for wine and the stories that often accompany the pulling of a cork. I live in Houston with my lovely wife and two wonderful sons.

  3. San Francisco . . . my favorite city in the US. And gateway to wine country! We’d move to San Francisco tomorrow if it didn’t cost the GDP of Lichtenstein to live there . . .

    1. I would hope it’s 100%. Truth in advertising?
    2. California is a BIG state . . . 50%.
    3. I would think 75%, but that seems too obvious. So 65%. (When in doubt, always choose C).
    4. 2, because it makes for the best comeback kid story.

    Have a GREAT trip! Salud!
