As some of you know, I occasionally write for another site, The Pennsylvania Vine Company, and just yesterday they posted my latest article, The Future of PA Wines?
The article chronicles my visit to a really outstanding winery right here in the good old Commonwelath of Pennsylvania, Galer Estate. Up until walking into Galer my experiences with Pennsylvania wines had been mostly forgettable (at best), but there was certainly something quite different about Galer even before we started tasting any wine. Right from the start, it seemed like the winery belonged on the West Coast in so many ways (all of them good). The winery was rustic and welcoming while still being bright and polished.
A far cry from other, more “established” wineries in the Commonwealth that seem mostly tired and even a bit dingy.
No, I could tell there was something different about Galer right from the beginning. Then I started tasting the wines–I was not disappointed. The wines were fantastic; the best wines I had tasted in PA. In fact, they were so good that I felt they did not need to be characterized as “Pennsylvania Wine” in the sense of a local curiosity–these wines were good even in comparison to their counterparts in New York, Washington, and California.
Go on over to PA Vine Co., give the site a little whirl, and be sure to let me know what you think about my article! And if you are in or near Southeastern PA, you should really go and try Galer, you will not be disappointed….

In general, which area of your state has the best wines?

This article was extremely informative! I makes me, as a West coaster, want to really try the East coast wines! It spurns(Not’Spurs’, but they are playing right now) me on to try wines of this nature! Thank you for sharing!

You had me interested when comparing it to other wine regions….and then you said New York. Really?

Watch out for New York. The Finger Lakes makes the best Rieslings in the country and many of the other wines that often don’t make it out of the state are truly wonderful. PA is still behind, but I think they are catching up….
