Wine Trivia Wednesday–#62

Well, it is Wednesday again, and time for the Weekly Wine Quiz. Last week, the Quiz was comprised of a few general wine knowledge questions, which we need to address first.

1. Which of the following statement is true?

a. Syrah is a legal stand alone AOC wine in Alsace.
b. Sauvignon Blanc is a legal stand alone AOC wine in Alsace.
c. Syrah is a legal stand alone AOC wine in Burgundy.
d. Sauvignon Blanc is a legal stand alone AOC wine in Burgundy.

D. Sauvignon Blanc is the only legally allowed cépage in the Saint Bris appellation in Burgundy.

2. This is the country with the highest per capita consumption of sparkling wine in the world:

a. England
b. France
c. Germany
d. United States

C. Germany. This surprised the heck out of me since Oliver hates sparkling wine.

3. Which of the following is not a part of biodynamics?

a. Yarrow blossoms fermented in the urinary bladder of a red deer.
b. Decomposed cow manure that had been stuffed into a cow horn.
c. Dandelions that had been fermented in a cow's bladder.
d. Crushed powdered quartz that had been stuffed into a sheep's skull.

D. While crushed powdered quartz is a part of one of the preparations in biodynamics, it is not required that it be stuffed into a sheep’s skull–that would just be silly (unlike the other choices, which seem perfectly logical, no?).

4. Who purchased the Mondavi residence in Yountville?

a. Francis Ford Coppola
b. Robin Williams
c. Jean-Charles Boisset and Gina Gallo
d. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
e. The Drunken Cyclist's former basketball coach

C. Jean-Charles Boisset and Gina Gallo.

Bonus Question: Who is this? And what is his connection to wine?

From Biography.com

From Biography.com

That is none other than Dave Matthews who is involved in the Dreaming Tree Wine brand.

That means we have just one who got all the questions right (and the bonus)–Julian At vinoinLove, but we might have had a record number of participants this week, so thanks to all who played last week!

On to this week’s quiz. Once again, instead of focusing on one wine region, the quiz this week is a hodgepodge of wine trivia. So in no particular order:

1. How many lakes are there in the Finger Lakes wine region>

a. Four
b. Five
c. Ten
d. Eleven

2. Put the following German terms in order from least to most ripe:

a. Auslese
b. Beerenauslese

a. A town in Slovakia known for sweet wines.
b. A cask used in the production of Hungarian wines.

4. What is the fastest way to chill a bottle of wine?

a. Put an ice sleeve around the bottle.
b. Put the bottle in the freezer
c. Put the bottle in a bucket of ice.
d. Put the bottle in salty ice water.

About the drunken cyclist

I have been an occasional cycling tour guide in Europe for the past 20 years, visiting most of the wine regions of France. Through this "job" I developed a love for wine and the stories that often accompany the pulling of a cork. I live in Houston with my lovely wife and two wonderful sons.

Again, I know the bonus, and sadly it’s because in my house, he’s part of our regular Sunday routine. I swear, we aren’t rednecks, but for some reason, the husband loves Nascar, and specifically Jeff Gordon. And we drink box wine. OMG, maybe we ARE rednecks!
