Happy Thanksgiving!—2013

Happy Thanksgiving (and Happy Hanukkah) to you all out there!

We just got back from the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day parade, the oldest such parade in the country. The parade passes about a half a mile from our house and we are making a it bit of a tradition to walk down and watch for a while. Last year, the weather was beautiful: sunny, calm, and about 55 degrees. This year? Well it is sunny, but near freezing with 20 mile an hour winds. Not as many balloons, nor as many photos. Nonetheless, here are a few (plus one from last year).

This year, we are heading to some friends for dinner today, but since that likely means no leftovers, we decided to cook our own feast tomorrow. My wife thought it would be fun to recreate many of the foods we had for Thanksgiving when we were kids, which means a Butterball turkey, Cool Whip, and a bunch of sides made from cans. She tried to get the canned cranberry “sauce” but they were sold out!

What is your favorite Thanksgiving Day food from your childhood?

Finally, we got a glimpse of Santa and it was time to go home.

  1. I turned on the Macy’s parade this morning and turned it right back off. It was too glitzy for my taste. Your Philadelphia parade looks like just the right kind (although I’d order it up with warmer weather…)

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.

My favorite food on the Thanksgiving table, I’m almost embarrassed to admit, was a pimento-stuffed olive (or 15 or 20). My grandmother served them in a little pickle dish, and we only got them at holidays (you can’t imagine how bland our meals were). They practically had to tie my hands to get me to stop sneaking them.

    • Yeah, the Philly parade is just right—a lot of high school marching bands and Miss America. From 2008. Santa looked like he might have had a little bender last night as well. Thanks for the holiday food story—a classic!

  3. Love the idea of celebrating the day with others, then…returning home to do it all over again – with leftovers! 🙂 Glad the sun was out for the parade. Stay warm and grateful. Happy Thanks Giving.

  5. Happy Thanksgiving. My favorite dish was dressing made with sausage, apples, raisins, onion, and celery. Yum.
