Wine Trivia Wednesday–#67

Well, it is Wednesday again, and time for the Weekly Wine Quiz. Last week’s Quiz was comprised of a few general wine knowledge questions, which we need to address first.

1. In which of the following states can you buy wine in a supermarket?

There were several more players last week, but the results are pretty much the same Anatoli of Talk-a-Vino was the only one to get all four questions correct–congratulations!

a. 75%
b. 80%
c. 95%

About the drunken cyclist

I have been an occasional cycling tour guide in Europe for the past 20 years, visiting most of the wine regions of France. Through this "job" I developed a love for wine and the stories that often accompany the pulling of a cork. I live in Houston with my lovely wife and two wonderful sons.

While I don’t know anything about Maconnais, I know everything about television.

So I’m going right to the bonus question.

That is Downton Abbey. Carson and Lord Robert Grantham are having a conversation about what wine to serve at a dinner before an Australian opera singer’s performance. I believe that the wine that was selected was a Chateau Margaux. Later, Lord Grantham and the opera singer discuss their mutual love for Bordeaux clarets.

  2. It’s been a while, so here are my Google-free answers (I know, I know. I’m free to use it. But what’s the fun in that?
    1 – A
    2 – True
    3 – D
    4 – B
Bonus – Downton Abbey, as Boom Boom and kids are hooked on it. Will cheat here and rely on Pinot Ninja’s answer of Ch Margaux…

    4. b, Pouilly Fuissé
    Bonus: sorry, no idea…

  4. I’m just sorry I missed last week’s quiz (because I was so busy writing #MWWC6, I’m sure). Bottle Shock is one of my favorite wine movies . . . Severus Snape as Stephen Spurrier is just beyond fantastic. Salud!

    Jeff,
According to Wikipedia which cites the official Vin Alsace site as its source, Gewürztraminer is the second most planted grape in Alsace. 1st is Riesling with 21.7%, 2nd Gewürztraminer with 18.6% and Pinot Blanc is only the 7th! most planted grape in Alsace with just 7%.

    1. 95%
    2. Every wine has natural Sulfur Dioxide. However, organic wines have less Sulfur Dioxide –> True.
    3. Certain Yeast Strains
    4 Pouilly Fuissé

    • Hi Julian, thanks for the comment and for playing again this week!
Did you go to the official Vin Alsace site? The one cited in Wikipedia does not have the data there (at least I could not find it). I did find Kevin Zraly, http://www.alsace-wine.net, and Wine for Dummies (at least as reliable as Wikipedia, I would think) who all state Pinot Blanc as #2 at around 21%. Certainly, as Anatoli pointed out, there is always a risk when you talk about “most” since it almost entirely depends on the source.

    Downton Abby
I loved the scene that week when he was aghast that a lowly opera singer would know the wine upon tasting. He suggested she must have seen the label. “And we’ll never be a Royals..” But we can still know good wine!
