Wine Trivia Wednesday–#69

Well, it is Wednesday again, and time for the Weekly Wine Quiz. Last week’s Quiz was comprised of a few general wine knowledge questions, which we need to address first.

1. What region produces Vin de Paille?
a. Champagne
b. The Jura
c. The Loire
d. The Savoie
B. The Jura. Vin de Paille (or “Straw Wine”) is a dessert wine made from grapes that have been dried out on a bed of straw, reducing the liquid and concentrating the sugars.
2. Which of the following producers is best known for their rosé?
a. Domaine Carneros
b. Domaine Vincent Girardin
c. Domaine Huet
d. Domaines Ott
D. Domaines Ott. Many consider the rosé wines of Domaines Ott in Provence to be among the best rosés in the world.
3. How many Grand Cru villages are there  in Champagne?
a. 7
b. 12
c. 17
d. 22
C. 17. My personal favorite Grand Cru villages are Ay, Bouzy, and Mailly. It is no coincidence that all of these towns are known for their Pinot Noir.
4. What does teinturier mean?
a. A variety that is added to only give color to a wine
b. A grape variety whose juice is red
c. A very dark rosé wine
d. An orange wine
B. A grape variety whose juice is red. Most wine grapes produce a clear juice, however.
Bonus Question: We all know the movie, but at the time of the movie, at what winery did the scene take place?
Extra Credit: The tasting room is now part of which winery?
The movie, Sideways, focused on the Sta. Rita Hills. At the time of the movie, this was the Sanford Winery tasting room. After a rather ugly takeover, Richard Sanford was forced out of his own winery, but he kept the tasting room, which is now part of his Alma Rosa Winery.
Wine Quiz 67
There were just a few players last week, and we have one winner: Anatoli of Talk-a-Vino not only got all the questions right, but he got both of the bonus questions as well! Honorable mention to Julian of VinoinLove who had three of the four questions correct. Congratulations!
On to this week’s quiz. Once again, instead of focusing on one wine region, the quiz this week is a hodgepodge of wine trivia. So in no particular order:
1. What is the oldest AVA in Napa Valley?
a. Howell Mountain
b. Los Carneros
c. Mt. Veeder
d. Stags Leap District
2. What is the newest Napa Valley AVA?
a. Atlas Peak
b. Calistoga
c. Coombsville
d. Diamond Mountain District
3. Of the following appellations, which does not have a Grand Cru vineyard for white wine?
a. Chassagne-Montrachet
b. Aloxe-Corton
c. Meursault
d. Puligny-Montrachet
4. Napoléon Bonaparte was associated with all of these wines except:
a. Chambertin
b. Constantia
c. Moët
d. Pétrus
Bonus Questions:
1. What specific wine is the server (the woman in the white shirt) holding?
2. Who is the woman in the black shirt (her real name, not character name)?
3. Name the movie.

About the drunken cyclist

I have been an occasional cycling tour guide in Europe for the past 20 years, visiting most of the wine regions of France. Through this "job" I developed a love for wine and the stories that often accompany the pulling of a cork. I live in Houston with my lovely wife and two wonderful sons.
