Well, it is Wednesday again, and time for the Weekly Wine Quiz. Last week’s Quiz was comprised of a few general wine knowledge questions, which we need to address first.
Last week, I decided to throw a few questions about Champagne out there:
1. What percentage of Champagne production is vintage designated?
a. 10% or less. b. 15% c. 20% d. 25% or more.
A. 10% or less. I likely will catch some heat for this, but according to all the French sites I consulted, it is between 5-10%.
2. Which of the following is likely most responsible for the earliest development and production of sparkling champagne?
a. The blending of several vintages b. The addition of the liqueur de tirage. c. The invention of "riddling" by Veuve Clicquot. d. Stronger bottles, capable by using coal to heat the glass.
D. Stronger bottles. Before the stronger bottles (by the British process of making a hotter fire with coal), as much as 50% of a year’s production would be lost to exploding bottles.
3. Which of the following is in Champagne?
a. Clos de la Coulée de Serrant b. Clos des Goisses. c. Clos de l'Echo. d. Clos Pepe.
B. Clos des Goisses.
4. What term does not describe a wine from Champagne?
a. Doux b. Grand Cru c. Premier Cru d. Vendange Tardive
D. Vendange Tardive. Means “late harvest” which does not happen in Champagne.
Bonus Question: Who is this and what type of vines are these likely to be?
This is Drew Barrymore who is associated with a Pinot Grigio.
There were a few more players last week, and we have a couple of winners: Anatoli of Talk-a-Vino (again) and The Wandering Sheppardboth only got one question wrong, but they got the bonus question right! Congratulations!
On to this week’s quiz. This week, we are back to a hodgepodge of wine trivia:
1. Soils rich in slate, like those in Germany, are thought to impart what flavors into the wine?
a. Apricot b. Cat Pee c. Green Apple d. Pineapple
2. Santorini (where I had my honeymoon) is known for which of the following white grapes?
a. Assyrtiko b. Debina c. Lagorthi d. Robola
3. Where was the first commercial grapevine wine nursery in the US?
a. Alabama b. California c. Missouri d. Pennsylvania
4. What is “Soutirage”?
a. Extreme Pruning b. Filtration c. Racking d. Addition of Sulfur
Good luck! Answers next week!

What a novel approach to blogging! Interaction with a fun quiz game! I know little about wine, so I especially appreciate this! I got some of them right just by educated guess… Thanks! That was a hoot!

2A – total guess
3D – only one one east coast. Probably for eating rather than wine?
4 B or C? Aren’t racking and filtering the same?
Bonus – Rudolf Steiner, father of biodynamics. Could’ve sworn you had his pic before…

Racking moves the wine from the lees, passively. Filtering is actively pushing the wine through a medium that will remove particulates to polish and clarify the wine. They are not the same thing.

5. Rudolf Steiner. He is the founder of biodynamics. I think he was in one of your previous quizzes before. Is that possible? It’s also possible though that I saw this question on a different blog 😛

Just saw other posts… I thought it might have been PA, but i had just read Missouri was the first AVA. And the last I tried a little Hooked on Phonics and that did not work for me.
