So today is Wine Trivia Wednesday and I have a doozy of a question for you.

As we know, liquor is controlled at the state level, and gosh knows every state is different. I’m in Ohio, and can’t recall ever purchasing in Pennsylvania. It seems the the PLCB (in a broad sense) is responsible for issuing liquor licenses, enforcing state laws about liquor, establishing state pricing via standardizing supply chain prices, and sales. In many ways, similar to my state.
However, I ask this question … should be one’s controlling the pricing & distribution be involved with a product? Personally, I think they are out of bounds with this endeavor. I think they are trying to increase revenue, but there are other ways within the liquor laws if the PLCB is willing to step out of its control mode.
For instance, there was a day when Ohio had it’s “state stores” for consumers to purchase. They got out that business (saved money on salary and expenses, plus increased availability, shifted the liquor purchases to the private sector stores, … but still control the price AND get a cut. Doesn’t that increase revenue? Sure it does.

I agree with you 100% Frank, if (and that is a big if) the controlling body were competent. The PLCB has repeatedly shown that they know little about wine or about running a business. I completely agree that if the state got out of the wine business altogether that sales would increase (meaning more in tax revenue), overhead (salaries, rent, etc.) would plummet resulting in a net gain for the state. For me there is little doubt of this. But for whatever reason (I chalk it up to the high level of inbreeding among politicians) the PLCB continues to exist.
