Wine Trivia Wednesday–Rack ’em up!

Another Wednesday and time for another wine quiz. Last week, as I was celebrating the one year anniversary of this blog with the worst cold/flu that I have had in my life, I decided to be a little narcissistic with the quiz and asked a few questions about me. Thinking about it now, I was clearly in a rather odd state of mind since I usually do not like talking about myself at all, but no time for any self-psychoanalysis today, let’s review the answers to last week’s quiz:

  1. In what region did I lead a bike trip with Ohmygod? The trip started in the Loire Valley (and then proceeded through Champagne and Belgium, but those episodes are still to come).
  2. Where do I live? The City of Brotherly Love: Philadelphia (not too far from the famed ‘Rocky Steps’ in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art).
  3. What is the acronym of the state controlled wine stores in my state?
PLCB (the PA Liquor Control Board)
  4. What was the first photo I posted and when was it?
The first photo I posted was when we went to Studio Kitchen a few days after I started the blog.
  5. What is my preferred red wine variety? Pinot Noir, although overall, I would have to say that I am a bit of a ‘Champagne Slut’ as the Winegetter so eloquently posted on Twitter the other day.

Both Talk-a-Vino and the FoodAndWIneHedonist got 4/5 right so I am declaring them co-winners this week.

On to this week.  All of this week’s questions are based on a photo:

  1. Wine QuizWhat is the French name for this?
  2. What is its exact purpose (no, it is night a rack to store wine)?
  3. Who is credited with inventing it?
  4. According to ‘legend’ what was the very first one made out of?

Have fun with the quiz–answers next week!

About the drunken cyclist

I have been an occasional cycling tour guide in Europe for the past 20 years, visiting most of the wine regions of France. Through this "job" I developed a love for wine and the stories that often accompany the pulling of a cork. I live in Houston with my lovely wife and two wonderful sons.

  3. Woohoo! Hedonist on the board…in last place but finally a win. Going for 2 in a row. Pupitre, to get the yeast to settle in Champagne production, Widow Cliquot, kitchen table. (Read a book on it a few years ago)

  4. 1. Pupitre
    2. For turning the bottles during champagne production – 2nd fermation, the bottles are turned daily in the rack in order to get all the sediments into the neck of the bottle. The design of the rack also allows for increasing the angle of the bottles during the process so the sediments can be more easily removed.
    3. Widow Cliquot
    4. Hmm, don’t know that one!
