Open That Bottle Night

As many of you know, tonight is Open That Bottle Night (OTBN). It was started a few years ago by two writers at the Wall Street Journal with a rather simple premise: many people have a ‘special’ bottle of wine that they have been waiting for a special occasion to open. The problem was that there was never an event ‘special enough’ to open. OTBN was created to give a reason to finally open that bottle.

It is essentially the Super Bowl for winos.

For me it is a bit difficult. At the risk of sounding obnoxious (which has never stopped me before) I have a few ‘that’ bottles. After much deliberation and plenty of time in the basement I pulled the trigger. We are having dinner at our good friends’ house in the ‘burbs and they had a couple ‘that’ bottles.

Here are the bottles for the night:

2006 Nicolas Joly Clos de la Coulee de Serrant
1980 Christian Brothers Cabernet
1988 Lamberti Recioto della Valpolicella Amarone Corte Rubini
2005 Cosentino The Poet Meritage

Any guesses on which two we brought?20130223-191827.jpg

About the drunken cyclist

I have been an occasional cycling tour guide in Europe for the past 20 years, visiting most of the wine regions of France. Through this "job" I developed a love for wine and the stories that often accompany the pulling of a cork. I live in Houston with my lovely wife and two wonderful sons.

  1. Yeah, we had a Open way too many bottles night last night, so I am passing on this one…:(

  2. I hope you opened the 1980 Christian Brothers . . . so curious how that was. And the Amarone . . . I love the “cellar character” on that label! Salud!

  3. We’re guessing the Amarone and the Clos de la Coulee. Just hunches. We adore John and Dottie of WSJ and miss them so much now that they are not writing. They got us starting in the world of wine appreciation. Whatever you opened, hope it was fabulous. Cheers!

We have started doing a version of OTBN, too. You know, just in case something were to happen and all that great wine would be left unopened in the wine fridges. Pretty much any excuse will do- i.e. “It was a good day in the stock market, let’s have a good wine,” or “It was a bad day in the stock market, we need a good wine.”

  7. They all look delicious, no matter which two you brought – Would love to know how the 1980 and 88 wines taste!

  8. They all look good. Was it the right phase of the moon to open the Coulée de Serrant?
