Wine Trivia Wednesday–Loire Valley

It is Wednesday again and time for another quiz. Before we get to this week’s questions, we need to review the questions from last week:

1. Before moving to the Côte de Beaunejust one more question about the Côte de Nuits: What makes Musigny unique?

a. It is the only village in the Côte de Nuits permitted to grow Syrah.
b. It is the only village in the Côte de Nuits that is Grand Cru for both red and white.
c. It has the largest area in the Côte de Nuits dedicated to Grand Cru plantings.
d. It produces what is consistently the most expensive wine in the world.

Answer: B. There is only a little bit of the Chardonnay planted in Musigny, and I have never had any, but I would guess it is rather spectacular. If you find some, give me a call!

2. In the Côte de Beaune, which village has the most Grand Cru vineyards for white wine?

a. Aloxe-Corton
b. Chassagne-Montrachet
c. Pernand-Vergelesses
d. Puligny-Montrachet

Answer: D. All of the above have Grand Cru vineyards and the last three share a few of them but P-M has the most with four (Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, and Montrachet).

3. Which of the following towns produces the most Pinot Noir?

a. Chassagne-Montrachet
b. Meursault
c. Puligny-Montrachet

Answer: A. These three towns are world famous for their white wines, but only Chassagne produces a significant amount of red.

4. Which appellation in the Côte de Beaune has the greatest overall production?

a. Beaune
b. Pommard
c. Savigny-les-Beaune
d. Volnay

Answer: A. Beaune, the main town in the Côte de Beaune (duh) dwarfs the other three in terms of overall production of Pinot Noir.

That means once again, the Grand Prize winner is Anatoli (aka Talk-a-Vino), who nailed each question! Great job!

On to this week’s quiz. I thought we would move on to another French wine region, the Loire Valley.

3. True or False: The Loire region is the third largest producer of sparkling wine in France.

4. Which of the following does not belong and why?

a. Chinon
b. Montlouis-sur-Loire
c. Sancerre
d. Vouvray

5. Which of the following does not belong and why?

a. Bourgeuil
b. Chinon
c. Sancerre
d. Saumur-Champigny

6. Bonus Question: Name the castleOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA7. Super extra special bonus: How was this castle special in popular French culture (think comic books)?

One last thing. I agree wholeheartedly with my fellow blogger Talk-a-Vino when he says:

“Side note: Google is your friend. It is impossible to know everything, and when you research, you learn…”

Best of luck–answers next week!

About the drunken cyclist

I have been an occasional cycling tour guide in Europe for the past 20 years, visiting most of the wine regions of France. Through this "job" I developed a love for wine and the stories that often accompany the pulling of a cork. I live in Houston with my lovely wife and two wonderful sons.

  3. Bicyclist, I’ve followed your blog all of a couple of days and to what do I open my eyes this morning? Truly my favorite French whites… of the Loire Valley. Mere mention of Vouvray and Sancerre find me yearning and drooling. Thank you for giving them due recognition!

  5. I’m rooting for Foxress to win.

(I’ve always been something of a cheerleader instead of a player–must be the era I was born in, when girls didn’t play, they just rah-rahed. I can hardly believe how not very long ago that was, and am glad that standards have changed so dramatically).

Actually, I’m too lazy too Google the answers I don’t know, and too competitive to show where I’m ignorant.
