Well, it is Wednesday again, and time for the Weekly Wine Quiz. Last week, the Quiz was comprised of a few general wine knowledge questions, which we need to address first.
1. True or False: Crème de Cassis comes from the town of Cassis in the South of France.
False. Although the two words have the same spelling, they are not pronounced the same. Cassis, the town in the South of France is pronounced CAH-see while cassis (which means black currant) is pronounced CAH-cease.
2. Explain the primary difference between the way in which Grand Cru status is determined in Burgundy, Champagne, and Bordeaux.
I was not looking for an expansive answer here. Simply put, Burgundy GC status is determined by the vineyard; in Champagne it is based on the village; and in Bordeaux it is based on the producers (or châteaux).
3. What is the most common variety grown in the relatively new Port Ross-Seaview AVA in California?
a. Cabernet Sauvignon b. Cabernet Franc c. Pinot Noir d. Zinfandel
C. Pinot Noir.
4. What do most people consider the “signature” white wine variety in Virginia?
a. Pinot Grigio b. Riesling c. Sauvignon Blanc d. Viognier
Most would agree that the answer is D. Viognier.
That means there was one winner last week: Frank Di Michale keeps his winning streak going! There were four others that also put forth a good showing: Anatoli of Talkavino, Frank of aFrankAngle, Oliver of thewinegetter, and Josh (who will have to let me know if he has a website).
On to this week’s quiz. Once again, instead of focusing on one wine region, the quiz this week is a hodgepodge of wine trivia. So in no particular order:
1. True or false: There is a town in Burgundy named “Chardonnay.”
2. Which of the following was the first French-owned sparkling wine venture in the U.S?
a. Domaine Carneros b. Domaine Chandon c. Mumm Napa d. Roederer Estate
3. Which of the following AVA has the most acres of Syrah planted?
a. Central Coast AVA b. Columbia Valley AVA c. Paso Robles AVA d. Russian River AVA
4. Approximately what percentage of wine is water?
Good luck answers next week!

1. True
2. b, Domain Chandon
3. Can’t find the exact data, but I would think that it should be b, Columbia Valley AVA
4. 80%-85% of a wine is water.
Bonus – no idea.
