Well, it is Wednesday again, and time for the Weekly Wine Quiz. Last week, the Quiz was comprised of a few general wine knowledge questions, which we need to address first.
1. Approximately what percentage of the wine produced in the U.S. comes from California?
a. 58% b. 68% c. 78% d. 88%
D. 88%–an astonishingly high figure (at least to me) given the popularity of several other states’ wines.
2. Approximately how old are the oak trees used for making barrels?
a. 50 years old b. 100 years old c. 150 years old d. 200 years old
B. Most oak barrels are made from trees that reach 100 years old (no wonder why those barrels are so expensive!).
3. Which of the following contain tannin?
a. black tea b. chocolate c. tobacco d. whiskey
Kind of a trick question here as all of the answers may contain some level of tannin.
4. Which of the following producers does not make Burgundy?
C. Nicolas Joly makes wine in the Loire Valley.
Bonus Question: Who is this?
The photo is James Suckling, former Senior Editor at the Wine Spectator.
That means the Grand Winner is Linda, aka Foxress, from From Vinho Verde to Barolo with Love. Honorable mention goes to VinoInLove (three in a row), and The Food and Wine Hedonist. Nice work everyone!
On to this week’s quiz. This week, the questions do focus on one particular region, purely by accident:
1. What do all of the following have in common?
a. Les Clos b. Les Preuses c. Valmur d. Vaudésir
2. Of those listed in Question #1, what is missing?
3. What do all of the following have in common?
a. Beaujoolais b. Chablis c. La Côte d'Or d. Mâconnais
4. Of those listed in Question #3, what is missing?
Good luck answers next week!

Totally off the topic, Jeff, but I’m going to do another bloggers’ community late this month, on the theme of “pumpkin party.” I’d like to feature you. Would you consider sending me a link to something you’ve posted or will soon post (related to food, wine, pumpkins and/or community) and I’ll incorporate it in my blog and link back to you.
