Wine Trivia Wednesday–#65

Well, it is Wednesday again, and time for the Weekly Wine Quiz. Last week, the Quiz was comprised of a few general wine knowledge questions, which we need to address first.

1. Which of the following does not belong?

a. Amarone
b. Bandolino
c. Orvieto
c. Soave
C. Orvieto. I clearly screwed this one up since I misspelled BaRdolino (as many of you pointed out). Had I spelled it correctly, Orvieto should have been the clear choice since it is a DOC in Umbria, while the other three are from the Veneto. Maybe getting those eye glasses is a good idea after all.

2. What percentage of the vines planted in Rioja are red?
a. 60%
b. 70%
c. 80%
d. 90%
D. 90%. The source I was using claimed 90%, but many of you cited sources that claimed closer to 80%, so I will accept either answer.

3. Which of the following does not belong?
a. Clairette Ronde
b. Procanico
c. Thalia
d. Trebbiano di Soave
D. Trebbiano di Soave. The first three are all synonyms for Trebbiano, but the fourth is actually a synonym for Verdicchio.
4. Which of the following would you likely serve at just slightly below room temperature?
a. Saint Amour
b. Saint Bris
c. Chassagne-Montrachet
d. Dizy Premier Cru
A. Saint Amour. Saint Amour is one of the ten crus in Beaujolais. As such, it is best when served just slightly colder than room temperature. The others should all be served colder (45-50 degrees).
Bonus Question: Who is this? Quiz 64

This is none other than Andrea Immer Robinson, one of the more famous women in wine. I never missed her TV show, Simply Wine, and was slightly depressed when I heard she got married.

Since I royally screwed up one question, another was ambiguous, and a third has varying answers (some sites claim that Trebbiano di Soave is actually Trebbiano), I am going to declare all those who played as winners! That means Antoine of Wine Ramblings, Anatoli of Talk-a-Vino , Tom of Velo-Vagabond, L.M. Archer of binNotes, and Julian of VinoInLove were all winners! It is a veritable Lake Woebegone here this week!

On to this week’s quiz. Once again, instead of focusing on one wine region, the quiz this week is a hodgepodge of wine trivia. So in no particular order:
1. The largest vineyard in England is just a short drive from London. The vineyard is in which of the following towns?
a. New Addington
b. Bromley
c. Croydon
d. Dorking
2. What wines are receiving the most accolades thus far from the burgeoning wine industry in England?
a. Big, bold, Cabernets
b. Buttery Chardonnays
c. Tangy Sparkling Wines
d. Spicy Shiraz
3. Which of the following does not belong?
a. Arneis
b. Barbera
c. Sangiovese
d. Dolcetto
4. Which of the following regions is best known for Cava?
a. Penedes
b. Rioja
c. Rueda
d. Priorat
Bonus Question: What movie is this? And what wine does the tall guy in the dark brown shirt have in his hand? Extra Credit: What is the vintage?
Quiz 65

Good luck! Answers next week!

About the drunken cyclist

I have been an occasional cycling tour guide in Europe for the past 20 years, visiting most of the wine regions of France. Through this "job" I developed a love for wine and the stories that often accompany the pulling of a cork. I live in Houston with my lovely wife and two wonderful sons.

    1. d. Dorking
    2. c, Sparkling wines
    3. I will chose c, Sangiovese, as the other three are the grapes from Piedmont, and Sangiovese is not. However, Arneis is the only white grape in the group : )
    4. a, Penedes.
    5. This is James Bond , that much I can tell. I would assume this is a sparkling wine, judging just by the bottle shape alone. From here, I would just have to guess further – I will go with Bollinger ’69

You really got me with that Trebbiano di Soave question. I did some further research and it appears that Trebbiano di Soave and Verdicchio have a lot in common but it is still not clear whether Trebbiano di Soave and Verdicchio are the same grape variety or just two very similar ones.
    Anyways, great questions!

    1. Dorking
    2. If i recall correctly I red somewhere a while ago that it’s sparkling wine.
    3. Trick question. As Anatoli pointed out Arneis is the only white grape in the group and Sangiovese is the only one not from Piedmont. So take your pick 🙂
    4. Penedes
    5. It’s James Bond Dr No (1962) and the wine is a Dom Pérignon 1955.
