Wine Trivia Wednesday–#79

Well, it is Wednesday again, and time for the Weekly Wine Quiz. Last week’s Quiz was comprised of a few Bordeaux wine knowledge questions, which we need to address first.

1. Which of the following does not belong?

a. La Bastide de Dauzac
b. Les Ormes de Pez
c. Château Chasse-Spleen
d. Château Potensac

A. La Bastide de Dauzac is the second wine of Château Dauzac, a Fifth Growth. All the others are Cru Bourgeois.

2. How many wines are rated as “Premier Cru Supérieur”?

a. 0 (no such classification)
b. 1
c. 4
d. 5

B. There is but one: Château d’Yquem.

3. What is the most widely planted grape variety in Bordeaux?

a. Cabernet Franc
b. Cabernet Sauvignon
c. Merlot
d. Sauvignon Blanc

C. Merlot.

4. Which of the following does not belong and why?

a. Château Ausone
b. Château Cheval Blanc
c. Château Pavie
d. Château Pétrus

D. Château Pétrus is located in Pomerol, while the other three are all in Saint-Émilion.

Bonus Question: Name the production and the actress (or character).20140312-090528.jpg

I thought this would generate at least an answer or two, since the actress is Sandra Oh, who was in one of the more famous wine movies of all time: Sideways. This is from her more recent work on Grey’s Anatomy (which I am forced to watch every week with my lovely wife).

Last week’s quiz produced a couple of winners: Julian of Vinoinlove, Anatoli of Talk-a-Vino and Antoine of Wine Ramblings. No one got the bonus, however (or even said it was from Sideways). Congratulations to all!

On to this week’s quiz: I thought for this week’s quiz we would play a little of the Sesame Street game “One of these things is not the like the other, one of these things just doesn’t belong.”

1. Which of the following does not belong?

a. Bual
b. Malvasia
c. Sercial
d. Verdelho

2. Which of the following does not belong?

a. Avize
b. Bouzy
c. Chouilly
d. Dizy

3. Which of the following does not belong?

a. Brouilly
b. Côte de Brouilly
c. Chiroubles
d. Givry

4. Which of the following does not belong?

a. Banyuls

Bonus Question: Name the film and the wine.20140319-090350.jpgGood luck! Answers next week!

About the drunken cyclist

I have been an occasional cycling tour guide in Europe for the past 20 years, visiting most of the wine regions of France. Through this "job" I developed a love for wine and the stories that often accompany the pulling of a cork. I live in Houston with my lovely wife and two wonderful sons.

    1. This is the tough one, as all four grapes are used in production in Madeira. Malvasia is the only grape there which has a Greek origin and represents the whole family of grapes, so I will go with b, Malvasia (the rest are Portuguese grapes)
    2. d, Dizy – the only not a Grand Cru village in Champagne
    3. d, Givry – the rest are Beaujolais Crus, but Givry is in the Burgundy
    4. d. Sauternes – the rest produce fortified wines similar in style to Port, where distilled spirit is added to stop fermentation.
Bonus: I would guess that this is James Bond and Dom Perignon – but this is all I can say here.

    1. All of these grapes are used to produce Madeira wine. I’m not sure what you’re after here..
    2. I don’t know this one :/
    3. Givry is from Burgundy – the other three appellations are from Beaujolais
    4. Sauternes is the only non-fortified wine in the list
    5. I think the movie is James Bond Goldfinger and the Champagne is Dom Perignon.

  4. 1 – d, 2. b, 3. d, 4.d (nothing belongs with Sauturnes).

BQ: James Bond, one of the Connery ones (Dr. No?) and that has to be Boone’s Farm (jk Dom Perignon) I’m getting perplexed one week it’s James Bond, another Drew, then LiLo, and then Sandra Oh. I’m more scared of the question than getting it right.
