Wine Trivia Wednesday–#86 (and a #MWWC9 Update)

Well, it is Wednesday again, and time for the Weekly Wine Quiz. Before we get to this week’s quiz, I first have a bit of an announcement to make.

As I hinted a while ago, I decided to change up the determination of how the winner of the Monthly Wine Writing Challenge would be determined. In short, the top three, as determined by the public vote, would then go to a panel of judges who would rank them, thus determining the winner. I hope to get a “celebrity” judge each time to liven things up a bit.

This month, our celebrity judge is Kimberly Faye, the co-host of Wine Life Radio, a published author and inspirational speaker (her bio is on the site). Kimberly also indicated that they would try to have the winner of the Challenge on a future show of Wine Life Radio! How’s that for some motivation to get your minions to vote?

OK, let’s have a little more excitement as we go over the answers from last week’s quiz (I know, you can barely contain yourself):

Seeing that I was in Austria sipping on some Grüner Veltliner as I wrote this, why not one more week of Austria?
1. Approximately what percentage of vines in Austria are Grüner Veltliner?
a. 10%
b. 25%
c. 35%
d. 50%
C. 35%. Perhaps Austria’s signature variety, it constitutes a little over a third of all the wines planted in the country.
2. Zweigelt, the most popularly planted red variety in Austria is a cross between Blaufränkisch and….
a. Blauberger
b. Merlot
c. St. Laurent
d. None of the Above (they are synonyms)
C. St. Laurent. Interestingly, both Blaufrankisch and St. Laurent are also made into wines in Austria.
3. Which DAC has the most acreage under vine?
a. Lower Austria
b. Burgenland
c. Wien (Vienna)
d. Wachau
A. Lower Austria.  Known as Niederösterreich in German, it has more than double the acreage as Burgenland (which is second).
4. Which of the following French varieties is most widely planted in Austria?
a. Cabernet Franc
b. Cabernet Sauvignon
c. Merlot
d. Syrah
C. Merlot. Blauburgunder (Pinot Noir) is actually more widely planted, but of those listed, Merlot has become the most prevalent.
Bonus Question:
Where in the world is this? (OK, it is obviously in Austria, but what wine region?)AustriaThis is the Schonbuhel Castle in the Wachau.

We had two winners last week: Linda of From Vinho Verde to Barolo with Love and Oliver, the Winegetter got all of the questions right as well as the bonus! They also get a special “brown-noser” award since they gave additional information (Linda cited Blauburgunder and Oliver named the castle)! Congratulations!

On to this week’s Quiz. Being the complete data geek that I am, I recently gathered together some data on our own little MWWC and this week’s quiz is based on an “analysis” of those data.

1. How many unique contributors have there been to the Challenge?
2. How many total entries have there been to the Challenge?
3. Talk-a-Vino, The Armchair Sommelier, and The Wine Raconteur all share a number in common when it comes to the Challenge–what is that number?
4. The Armchair Sommelier holds the record for most consecutive weeks submitting and binNotes has the current longest active streak. What is the sum of these two numbers?
Bonus Question: What is missing?

Devotion, Fear, Feast, Mystery, Oops, Possession, Transportation

No need to Fear numbers (see what I did there?)–I am going to add up all the correct answers to the questions, and will come up with a number (e.g., ” 123″) and who ever comes closest to that total wins!
Good luck! Answers next week!

About the drunken cyclist

I have been an occasional cycling tour guide in Europe for the past 20 years, visiting most of the wine regions of France. Through this "job" I developed a love for wine and the stories that often accompany the pulling of a cork. I live in Houston with my lovely wife and two wonderful sons.
