As some of you may recall, I am out in Lodi, California with a group from Snooth.com visiting and learning about the Lodi Wine Appellations. I had hoped to have more time to tend to this blog, but that was merely wishful thinking. The trip has been incredible thus far, packed full of great people, tons of information, wonderful food, and wine. Lots of wine.
Before I can post something more substantive, here are just a few of the photos that I have taken thus far.
Robert Pirie (right), a vineyard manager and pivotal figure among Lodi wine growers, with Camron King, Executive Director of the Lodi Winegrape Commission, at Clay Station Vineyard in the Borden Ranch Sub-Appellation.
Dinner at Wine and Roses in Lodi with Craig Ledbetter (at the head of the table) of Vino Farms, one of the larger growers in Lodi.
Markus Bokisch (Bokisch Vineyards) in Las Cerezas Vineyard.
Brett Koth of Mokelumne Glen Vineyards doing his best disco moves (actually I just caught this as he was pointing out some of the vineyards). He is the son of Bob and Mary Lou Koth (seated), pioneers in bringing German varieties to the U.S.
Yeah, I went there….
A typical morning tasting at Bokisch Vineyards.
We went into a lot of vineyards, this is a 100-year-old vine in the Schmeidt Vineyard.
Randy Caparoso discussing the Lodi Native Project (much more on that down the road).
Tim Holdener (Macchia Wines) giving us a tour of the Noma and Schmeidt vineyards.
The group at the Lodi Native Tasting (left to right): Ryan Sherman (Fields Family Wines), Layne Montgomery (m2 Wines), Amy Corron Power (AnotherWineBlog.com), Tim Holdener (Macchia Wines), The Drunken Cyclist, Frank Morgan (DrinkWhatYouLike.com), Julia Crowley (TheRealWineJulia.com), Gabe Sasso (GabesView.com) Claudia Angelillo (Snooth.com), Stuart Spencer (St. Amant Winery), Mark Angelillo (Snooth.com)
About the drunken cyclist
I have been an occasional cycling tour guide in Europe for the past 20 years, visiting most of the wine regions of France. Through this "job" I developed a love for wine and the stories that often accompany the pulling of a cork. I live in Houston with my lovely wife and two wonderful sons.
Thanks for the virtual tour!

You need to come and have the real thing! Lodi really should be on everyone’s radar as a wine country destination.

We were going to go there, but Mike McCay is out of town. We had his Viognier last night and it was outstanding.

It was great “seeing” you last night! What did you think about the tasting?

I thought it was excellent. I have attended many tastings lead by Master Somms, they are always excellent. It was tough to taste, write, tweet and type on Snooth! Woo. It sounds like you all had a fab week in Lodi!

I thought it was really good, too. I told the Snooth people that it was a really good idea to have the Lodi marketing guy, Camron King, there as well. He was able to fill in with info that Kyle, the grower, could not. Camron is very good at what he does….

Sounds like a blast; I like the Gruener Veltliner from Dancing Coyote in Acampo (adjacent to Lodi), and I always have a hard time finding a good Gruener Veltliner that is not imported from Austria.

Lodi is so incredibly diverse–we have had so many different varieties (there are over 100 planted here), but interestingly, no Grüner (yet).

Are wine goggles supposed to be classier than beer goggles?

I think so. At least that is what they told me when they insisted that I put them on….

One of the others on the trip was telling me about the press trip he took to Tequilla. That sounds like it would be up your alley, no?

They are all over here in the Lodi appellation! Yesterday, we went by the Bechthold Vineyard that has 130 year old Cinsault vines!
