Sundays Are For Sebastian #132

Sebastian is my seven-year old and he says some of the funniest things–we have no idea where he gets his material since his mother and I are rather boring, serious people.

Unlike when I was growing up, neither of my boys have any interest watching sports on T.V. I feel like it is pulling teeth to get them to sit for more than a minute in front of a screen to watch a game. This concerns me a bit since although I actually wish that I was less interested in the hugeness of organized sports, I feel that they are such a large part of American society, they should at least have a passing knowledge of the various rules so as not to be labeled social pariahs as they grow up.

The other day, Sebastian was playing a game on the iPad, and started screaming.

Me: “What are you playing?”

Seba: “EA Sports Madden Mobile Football.”

Me: “Huh? When did you start playing that?”

Seba: “A couple of days ago.”

Me: “Really? How is it going?”

Seba: “I am crushing them, 24-0.”

Me (A bit surprised): “You kicked a field goal?”

Seba: “No! of course not.”

Seba: “It’s called a two-point conversion, Dad. I thought you said you played football?”

I decided to dig a little deeper….

Me: “What team are you?”

Seba: “Detroit.”

Me: “Detroit who?”

Seba: “Um, the Detroit Tigers?”

About the drunken cyclist

I have been an occasional cycling tour guide in Europe for the past 20 years, visiting most of the wine regions of France. Through this "job" I developed a love for wine and the stories that often accompany the pulling of a cork. I live in Houston with my lovely wife and two wonderful sons.

I confess I had to pass this one through my beloved husband, as I did not “get” it… hey, I’m Brazilian… some of this stuff goes way over my head… I side with Seba 😉

Well, he’s not that far off- just got the wrong Detroit sports team 🙂 I do that with Atlanta all the time- I call the Falcons the Hawks (in spite of or because of not even being a basketball fan- oh the horror)

Just when you were ready to call ESPN with news of your son, the sports prodigy, reality taps you on the shoulder.

I love that you were dismayed at the thought of kicking a field goal in a football video game. Everyone knows that if you’re in FG range, you go for it, period. Glad to hear he didn’t make that mistake, that would have been worse than calling the Lions, the Tigers (insert you bear joke here), oh my.
