As I mentioned in my last post, I was supposed to announce the winner of this month’s Monthly Wine Writing Challenge yesterday, but there were two factors that made me wait another day. The first, which is still tragically occurring, are the devastating wild fires that are consuming thousands of acres in California. As you no doubt have heard by now, some of the worst damage has been in the Santa Rosa area, the capital of the Sonoma County wine region. Details are still hard to amass, but I know that whole neighborhoods, several wineries, and countless other businesses have been destroyed.
The other factor, which is at best trivial when compared to the first, is that I had hoped that the extra day would somehow enable a different outcome. The person who was leading the vote at this time yesterday had already won the Challenge a few times and frankly, did not need any more boost to his ego. Unfortunately, the extra 24 hours did not change the outcome at all. In fact, this month’s winner received a few more votes with the unforeseen addition of time.
I thought about delaying the announcement even further, but it does not appear that either of the two factors above will be mitigated with another delay.
So with no further ado…

Yeah, I know. It rings a bit fishy that the guy who is counting the votes ends up winning the contest. I honestly thought about announcing second place as the winner, but with all the talk about the integrity of elections swirling about these days, it did not seem like the right thing to do.
Perhaps the only upside of this result is that, since I am now responsible for choosing the next theme (for #MWWC36), I will have no one to blame but myself if it is not submitted in a timely fashion.
