Sundays Are For Sebastian—Father’s Day

Last week, we had an office “retreat” and without going into any of the details, if you have ever had a “retreat” you know what it was like. Let me just say we attempted to come up with a mission statement.

Look out Steven Covey.

There were some “ice-breakers” that were designed to be interesting and fun (I will leave it up to your imagination what I thought about those). One of them involved a series of questions that were to provide insight into the different personalities in the room. The questions ranged from “What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?” to “What actor would play you in a movie?”

Hmmm.

There was one question, though, that I instantly knew how I would answer and why. The question was “What is your favorite picture of you?” Most people recalled a photo taken when they were young, when they looked particularly adorable.

Ahem.

Personally, I do not like having my picture taken at all. I am not exactly sure why, but I am not about to spend a small fortune to pay a therapist to help me understand. But there are two pictures that I really love. They are the first pictures taken right after my both of my sons were born. IMG_0017_1

That is a considerably younger (and thinner) me holding Nathan on March 26, 2003.

There are few things that I have been certain of in my life, but I always knew that I wanted to be a father. I will likely never be selected as father of the year (I am no Bill Clinton), but I do know that these two little knuckleheads have brought me far greater joy than I ever could have imagined.

I will be spending Father’s Day with my three favorite people in the world, choking down some very dense cupcakes for breakfast, being frustrated down at the baseball field (for not one but two games), and arguing with them to eat their vegetables at dinner.

And I will be loving every minute of it.

Happy Father’s Day to all you dads out there. I am sure that you feel as lucky and as blessed as I do.

About the drunken cyclist

I have been an occasional cycling tour guide in Europe for the past 20 years, visiting most of the wine regions of France. Through this "job" I developed a love for wine and the stories that often accompany the pulling of a cork. I live in Houston with my lovely wife and two wonderful sons.

  2. Just wait until you have grandchildren. My daughter just gave birth to baby #6 this past week. She was an only child and apparently didn’t like being raised alone!!! But we feel blessed to have them all and love them dearly.

We had a retreat a couple years back and had to share ‘something your coworkers dont know about you’. I announced I was pregnant. I wasn’t. …but it sure was fun watching everyone’s reaction….before I confessed! Those are in fact the best pics given their meaning to you. What a great dad!

  5. Great pictures–wonderful sentiments. I don’t know why none of your posts showed up in my reader for about three weeks–suddenly they’re all there. I thought you were on vacation and not posting… so belated happy father’s day, and happy trails.
