It is Wednesday again and it is time for another installment of Wine Trivia Wednesday. Before we get to this week’s quiz, we need to get to the answers from last week. We were out on the West “Coast” last week so the theme was California based:
- True or false: California wine production has a greater economic impact in the state than the film industry. True. the film industry has a $30 billion impact on the CA economy, while wine is in excess of $50 billion.
- Approximately what percentage of the total land area of Napa County is planted to the vine?

- Who planted the first vines in the Napa Valley and in what year? By most accounts, George Yount (after whom Yountville was named) planted the first grapes in 1838.
- Who is the largest private owner of vineyards in the Napa Valley? Again, by most accounts,it is Andy Beckstoffer with about 1000 acres of vineyards.
- Super duper bonus question: Who’s cave is this (Hint: it is a Pinot/Chardonnay producer in Sonoma)? Little did I know that the answer to this question was in the photo–if you enlarge the photo, you can see the name “Freeman” on the keystone. The person in the photo is the “real” winemaker at Freeman, Eric Buffington.
That means that no one got all of the questions right, but Talk-a-Vino, with 4/5 is this week’s winner. Honorable mention to both aFrankAngle and theFoodandWineHedonist, who both stuck their necks out there.
On to this week’s quiz. As I wrote the comment about Eric in the picture above, I thought I would make this week’s quiz a visual one, based on photos. The first three are wine related, the last two are about cycling.

Ok, I’ll play, but I won’t get them right.
1. I’ll go with thefoodandwinehedonist’s response of Rudolf Steiner because he sounds like he’s smart and knows what he’s talking about.
2. The Easter Bunny. In my house the Easter Bunny brings wine, and that totally makes him the nicest guy in wine. Except for maybe Santa Claus.
3. I’m going to disagree with thefoodandwinehedonist here. That’s not a Pinot glass, plus those look like hotter climate plantings. I’m going to say Cab. Sauv.

2. Hah! I love all the answers to #2 and I love the guy! He is so much fun to taste wine with! I met him at the petite sirah symposium July 2011 and we laughed so much we had to exchange cards. Bet you took this photo at WBC12. And the answer is: Wilfred Wong, Mr Bevmo!
