It is Wednesday again and it is time for another installment of Wine Trivia Wednesday. Before we get to this week’s quiz, we need to get to the answers from last week. We were out on the West “Coast” last week so the theme was California based:
- True or false: California wine production has a greater economic impact in the state than the film industry. True. the film industry has a $30 billion impact on the CA economy, while wine is in excess of $50 billion.
- Approximately what percentage of the total land area of Napa County is planted to the vine?
5%- 10%
15%20%
- Who planted the first vines in the Napa Valley and in what year? By most accounts, George Yount (after whom Yountville was named) planted the first grapes in 1838.
- Who is the largest private owner of vineyards in the Napa Valley? Again, by most accounts,it is Andy Beckstoffer with about 1000 acres of vineyards.
- Super duper bonus question: Who’s cave is this (Hint: it is a Pinot/Chardonnay producer in Sonoma)? Little did I know that the answer to this question was in the photo–if you enlarge the photo, you can see the name “Freeman” on the keystone. The person in the photo is the “real” winemaker at Freeman, Eric Buffington.
That means that no one got all of the questions right, but Talk-a-Vino, with 4/5 is this week’s winner. Honorable mention to both aFrankAngle and theFoodandWineHedonist, who both stuck their necks out there.
On to this week’s quiz. As I wrote the comment about Eric in the picture above, I thought I would make this week’s quiz a visual one, based on photos. The first three are wine related, the last two are about cycling.

Once again proving my desire to stick my neck out there rather than get correct answers –
1 – Rudolf Steiner – I actually knew that one. There’s a school here in A2 named after him and I looked it up a couple weeks ago.
2 – The Dalai Llama
3 – Pinot Noir
4 – You, because you strike me as the type to have large photos of yourself all over the house. Nice sideburns, btw.
5 – Bobby J… because that’s the file name.

You are the uber-sleuth–you claim not to use Google, but you enlarge photos, check urls, etc. I don’t think you can self-classify as “lazy” anymore….

I forgot to mention the unveiled insinuation that I am a narcissist.
When did you talk to my wife?

Yeah, but those don’t involve going to Google and typing in search terms. That’s exhausting.

Ok, I’ll play, but I won’t get them right.
1. I’ll go with thefoodandwinehedonist’s response of Rudolf Steiner because he sounds like he’s smart and knows what he’s talking about.
2. The Easter Bunny. In my house the Easter Bunny brings wine, and that totally makes him the nicest guy in wine. Except for maybe Santa Claus.
3. I’m going to disagree with thefoodandwinehedonist here. That’s not a Pinot glass, plus those look like hotter climate plantings. I’m going to say Cab. Sauv.
4. You (I think we’ve seen that picture before).
5. Bobby Julich – because I googled Bobby J. and that’s what popped up.

Between you and the hedonist, you certainly got the last one right!

Regarding the previous quiz – interestingly enough, Wikipedia article on George Yount has no mention of any grape plantings whatsoever… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_C._Yount
For today’s quiz, I’m very far away from the cycling world, so here are my answers:
1. No idea, but I would go with thefoodandwinehedonist’s opinion
2. No idea, I’m glad he is nice
3. Pinot Gris
4. I don’t know who it is, but I know where this picture is – it is part of your cellar or the room where you take pictures of your bottles – this picture is all over your blog.
5. no idea, but agreed with thefoodandwinehedonist and wineandhistory

The photo is in the cellar, indeed. Good answer to one of the tougher questions (at least I thought).

1) I know that one because I like organic agriculture. It’s Rudolf Steiner who is said to be the founder of biodynamic agriculture.
2) Looks like the Dalai Lama but no idea what he has to do with wine.
3) Pinot Noir because I believe it is your favorite grape
4) I don’t know.
5) I googled Bobby J and that picture popped up

1. Yep, that’s Rudolph Steiner in #1 –Mr BioD baby! He put the e(cosystem) back in wine!
2. Hah! I love all the answers to #2 and I love the guy! He is so much fun to taste wine with! I met him at the petite sirah symposium July 2011 and we laughed so much we had to exchange cards. Bet you took this photo at WBC12. And the answer is: Wilfred Wong, Mr Bevmo!
3. You mean that’s not tapenade? Oh, hmn, ok going with cab sauv
4. Well you looked a little different at WBC12 but the guy in the photo also looks tall like you. And obviously you both are cyclists.
5. Bobby Julich sounds reasonable! (and my husband the cyclist is busy)
